Located at Mohamed Sultan Road in the River Valley area, this Chinese temple is a beautiful example of traditional Hokkien architecture and a significant cultural landmark. Hong San See was built between 1908 and 1913 by Hokkien immigrants from Nan’an County in Fujian Province, China. They brought materials directly from China to construct it, reflecting their dedication to preserving their heritage. Perched on a small hill, it originally offered a view of the sea, which made it an ideal spot according to Chinese geomancy principles. The name "Phoenix Hill" ties into this auspicious positioning, symbolizing renewal and prosperity. The temple’s design features classic Southern Chinese elements: curved roof ridges with upturned "swallow-tail" ends, adorned with intricate carvings of dragons and other motifs symbolizing power and good fortune. These decorations often use a technique called jian nian (cut-and-paste), where colorful ceramic pieces are meticulously shaped into mosaics. Inside, the main deity is Guang Ze Zun Wang, a revered figure from Fujian lore, tied to the temple’s Nan’an roots. Historically, it’s more than just a place of worship. It served as a community hub for early Hokkien immigrants, offering a space to connect and support one another. At one point, it even housed a school, Nan Ming School, from 1915 to 1925, educating local children before financial issues forced its closure. Over the years, the temple has seen renovations—some, like the one in 1970, strayed from tradition, but a major restoration from 2006 to 2009 brought it back to its original glory. That effort earned it a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2010, a first for a Chinese temple in Singapore. Today, managed by the Singapore Lam Ann Association, Hong San See sits amid modern bars and upscale apartments—a quiet nod to the past in a bustling city. It’s not as tourist-heavy as some other spots, but visitors often praise its serene atmosphere and the warm hospitality of its caretakers. It was a towering 37-meter-tall statue that depicted a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, which was the symbol of Singapore. Visitors could climb to the top of the statue and take in the breathtaking views of the island and the surrounding sea. However, in 2019, it was announced that the Sentosa Merlion would be demolished to make way for new developments on the island. The demolition was completed in early 2020, and the iconic statue is no longer a part of Sentosa's landscape. Though it's no longer standing, the Sentosa Merlion will remain an important part of Singapore's cultural heritage and history, and will be remembered fondly by locals and tourists alike.
